Louie Pearlman

Comedian/Writer/Creator

Originally and proudly from Calgary Canada, Louie Pearlman has been an innovator and a maverick of the New York City comedy and arts scene since 2002. He's a producer, director, performer and teaching artist with the nationally recognized arts education company Story Pirates, where he's performed in theaters, music festivals and schools across the country. He's also the co-creator of the cult demento-kids show for adults APT. 33, which enjoyed a run for over a year at The Magnet Theater and currently the co-host of the music/comedy podcast Kick the Jukebox.

Louie's other performance credits include Seth Lind's internationally live-broadcast Cast Party, the viral musical sensation The Spidey Project, and numerous shows with his Hip Hop improv team, Robopop.

Earlier on in his creative life, he jump-started the careers of Ezra Miller (Justice League) and Griffin Newman (The Tick) as the Artistic Director of the Comedy program at Buck's Rock Creative and Performing Arts Camp. They're both playing superheroes in movies and TV shows now, so that's pretty cool.

He's worked as a brainstormer inventing new products for branding company Brand Now! and he's taught improv and team building across the continent with students of all ages. Louie would love to work with your comedy group, creative project or company to make you a better communicator and part of a team.

When Louie's not onstage, he's a writer for retro music art and culture website Rebeat Magazine and Muppet news and commentary site Tough Pigs. He's also a pretty good ukulele player and songwriter. On his downtime, he loves collecting records and comics, eating through every NYC restaurant that has veggie options, and, ya know... yoga.

  • Channel Z Has Resumed It's Programming Day

    October 11, 2016

My old blog, Channel Z has a new mission, purpose, and hopefully a vibrant and meaningful life. You can check it out at http://channel-z.tumblr.com or from my links below.

For the past few years, I’ve become a staff writer for two excellent websites: Rebeat Magazine, an incredible mid-century music, arts and culture blog and ToughPigs.com, my favorite blog for Muppet Fans Who Grew Up (I’m capitalizing because it’s their tag line, silly!). Both these sites are a total joy. I can’t express the talent and care that my editors exhibit in curating some of the best work on the internet.

However, what if I want to write a piece that’s not about mid-century arts and culture or Jim Henson and his felty creations?

Enter the new Channel Z. I’m going to try to push myself as a writer, journalist and pop culture analyst by writing pieces that are about subjects I otherwise wouldn’t be able to pitch. Assignments for those websites can keep me busy, but I’m still going to do my best to keep some content flowing on Channel Z.

    Thanks for tuning in!

    November 07, 2015

Guys! Got a packed week! My Hip-Hop improv team Robopop has two shows and APT. 33, my kids show for adults is doing a very cool, very sleek "unplugged" episode on Monday! If you haven't seen APT. 33 in a while, we are rocking it. We've got a new director and some awesome new cast-members. That show is on fleek. I'd love to see you there!

  • APT. 33 Returns This Monday!

    September 12, 2015

Hey everyone! Hope your summers are winding down and are becoming lovely and wonderful.

After doing a two-and-a-half hour insane show at the Magnet two weeks ago, APT. 33 IS BACK on Monday at 8:30 with a much more manageable one hour show! Will Alan ever move back into the apartment, do Louie and Alan have enough in common to continue hosting their demented kids show from hell from their apartment?? Only TIME will TELL!

Also - APT. 33 is looking for a Stage Manager, Producer and Social Media Ninja! Please check out this post on my blog if you're interested or want to pass along to people less crazy than Alan, Jo and myself: http://louie4711.tumblr.com/post/128955606536/apt-33-looking-for-producer-stage-manager

  • Who wants some cool 'pop?

    August 05, 2015

Yo yo everyone! So much updating to do. Cast Party ended up being one of the best experiences of my creative life. Nothing like performing for almost 900 people over two nights and having it broadcast to movie theaters across three countries! For those of you who missed it, there will be a download. Don't worry - I'll let you know when I do.

This week you can see me do some sketch tomorrow at Magnet at 9, which is rare these days and you've still got two chances to see me with Robopop this month, one this monday! Our rhymes are sweet, our comedy is tight. What more could you want?

  • The Summer Won't Stop!

    July 14, 2015

Oh man. What a month it's been since I've last done one of these. I Story Pirated for a crowd of slightly wet but enthusiastic parents and families at Wilco's very hip Solid Sound Festival, rocked it with Robopop at UCBeast and Dancefloor Makeout at The Magnet, and was best man at my favorite dude Owen's Calgary wedding - who's wedding photo went viral... WHAAAT?

This week, Robopop has a big show at Midtown International Theater Festival and I'm gearing up for a role in NPR Cast Party, which will be broadcast live at the end of the month in movie theaters across US & Canada. Great chance for you to see me if you don't live in NYC.

  • Three Big Ones This Week

    June 14, 2015

Hey pals! I can't believe I didn't have any shows last week! It was actually great to have a performing week-off.. Ended up seeing Love and Mercy (I totally cried), going to FlameCon - the first ever LGBTQ Comicon anywhere ever (it was on fleek!) and played laser-tag while brunching today (I actually don't recommend this combo. At all.).

This week I'm back, baby! With three shows! Dancefloor Makeout has it's own slot at The Magnet tomorrow. We'd love to be doing more work there, and audience numbers matter so I'd love if you'd come out. Next Sunday is Robopop in Indy Cagematch at UCB! Your attendance could get us more shows there as well, so seriously, do a dude-bro a solid and I'll give you a manly hug after, a'ight? OK, I admit. Not so manly.

  • Bye May! June: BRING IT

    June 03, 2015

Hey pals! May was great month creatively. I got to say goodbye to APT. 33 for a while, had some very silly improv sets with Triad and Dancefloor Makeout and raised a whole bunch of money for creative writing programs in well-deserving low-income schools at the fabulous annual Story Pirates benefit!

June sees more star-turns for Dancefloor Makeout, the return of Robopop and I'm making a rare appearance performing in Massachusetts at MASS MOCA with Story Pirates at Wilco's Solid Sound fest! How hipstery of me! If you can't join me in Mass, you can see We Love TV: The Muppet Show at The PIT that same weekend, which I'm serving as creative consultant on! So even though I'll be out of NYC, you can see a show I've touched (artistically, GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER THIS IS THE MUPPETS WE'RE TALKIN ABOUT!). More info about that exciting show next week!

  • Donate to Story Pirates in honor of a teacher who inspired you and get some great swag!

    May 22, 2013

Here is the donation link: http://storypirates.causevox.com/louie4711

Hey guys! As a lot of you know, I’m a Story Pirate.

Story Pirates are a group of comedians, actors, musicians, puppeteers and teachers that go into schools, run amazing creative writing workshops and make them into big, loud, crazy shows to perform for the kid-authors of the stories!

These shows inspire kids to write more and prove to these kids that their words and ideas are important.

Every year we serve over two-hundred low income schools with Story Pirates programs and we need your help! So, I’m trying to raise $2000 by June 14th to continue the important work we do in schools across the country and beyond.

This year, we’re dedicating all of our fundraising efforts to teachers that made a difference in our lives. I’m dedicating my fundraising to Brigid Stewart, an amazing teacher from Strathcona Tweedsmuir school in Okotoks, Alberta who directed me in six plays during junior high and high school and helped make me the crazy guy that I am today!

If you donate money to Story Pirates in honor of a teacher that inspired you, the Story Pirates will spread the love by writing a thank you note to the teacher of your choice shouting out to them on our facebook page and more! So your love of your teacher who inspired you helps the Story Pirates inspire countless kids that need our help.

Not only that, but your donation will get you some awesome prizes that you can check out here.

If you don't have any spare funds to donate to the Story Pirates cause, you can still donate your voice!

Ultimately our goal is to celebrate the ideas of young people, and one of the best ways we can do that is by continuing to have conversations about how to make education the best it can be.

You can donate your voice and opinions to that cause by interacting with story pirates on our twitter, Facebook, tumblr, Pinterest and more. The more people talking about education, the better! So spread the word and donate your voice today!

I love you all - Louie

Here are the rewards the Story Pirates and I will provide for your donation:

$25 – The Story Pirates will give a shout-out to the educator of your choice on our facebook wall.

$40 - Back by popular demand, Louie will make you a personalized Sixties Bubblegum Music Mix CD and mail it to you!

Hey everyone! I am producing my friend Roman's new storytelling show that will be in New York starting at the end of the month.

Roman is an amazing Storyteller whose shows deal with issues of economic inequality, gender, love, loss and baseball games. I really believe in his work. Please take a look at his indiegogo page and throw him a few bucks if you can.

Even posting this page on your facebook or twitter would mean a lot. Thanks!

  • March 18th Weekly Update!

    March 18, 2013

  • March 10th Weekly Update!

    March 10, 2013

    Hey Gang!

I'm going to try to do little weekly updates as to what I'm up to for this site and for my tumblr as well, so here it goes...

Just got back from a great writing meeting with my longtime comedy partner Kaitlin Fontana. We're attempting a try at written material (our first, all our other work is improvised) and it's going really well! I'm excited about the project, more news about it as it develops.

I had a really good time starting my new Teen Improv Class this week. There are still some slots left if you'd still like to register or know someone who does. If so, sign up here.

This week also saw me celebrate my ten year friendversery with the talented and amazing Angela DeManti. We had hummus at hummus place and then split a 16 Handles. It was pretty cute.

Finally, I was directing some awesome Story Pirates Create-A-Shows and Idea Storms in New Jersey.

This upcoming week, I've I'm in The Magnet's GLBTQ improv show There's No Place Like Home on Monday night and I'm in a new Story Pirates show at a school in the Bronx on Friday morning.

My DJ partner Allison and I are trying our hand at recording 60s-music themed a podcast this upcoming weekend. I can't wait to work on it with her and share it with the 60s music geeks of the world.

I'm also really looking forward to the Story Pirates After-Darks and Mainstage Shows I'm in near to the end of the month too. Aaaand that's my spring break from teaching that'll happen as well!

Thanks for all your nice facebook comments on the new website. I appreciate your feedback and support. -LP

  • Welcome!

    March 07, 2013

    Welcome to the new www.LouiePearlman.com

This will be your one stop for updates on all of Louie Pearlman's creative projects. Enjoy!

Reviews

  • "The entire nine-person cast is hysterically funny (and that's a good thing, since The Spidey Project is, above all, a comedy), but Neumann and Pearlman are particular standouts for wringing laughs out of every lyric and line of dialogue."

    Daniel Lehman, Backstage.com
  • "A [true] example of 'improv THEATRE.' [Buckshot N Benny's] set is the sort of thing than non-improv people see and can't believe is improvised. It was that good."
